What has been is written in my flesh

Duration
One hour and 30 minutes

In the production What Has Been Is Written in My Flesh, there is a person on stage, but not the main character. The person is in a room, in an ordinary block of flats. In fact, there is only one noteworthy character on stage: the Room. The person is at the mercy of the Room, while the Room has its own will and power to dictate the course of events. The Room demands enslavement from its inhabitants, granting them feelings of home and security, a dry place and a roof over their heads when it not only rains, but pours. In return, the inhabitants fix the roof, scrub the floors, change the wallpaper, work on the wobbly table leg, do laundry, beat the carpets, submit water meter readings, mop the staircase, freshen up the toilet, heat the stove and patch the tablecloth. The bathroom drain is clogged again, it’s time to make dinner, the stove is so dirty, there’s no milk for coffee, we should go to the store later, buy some ham and bread for breakfast. Why is that car honking outside the window again? Staged by Marika Vaarik, Lauri Lest and Urmas Lüüs, the play dives in between different worlds. It is both a theatrical play and a spatial installation, a collage of soundscapes and an anthropological observation. The play showcases everyday moments and existential outbursts, focusing on reality, or perhaps hyperreality: everything that takes place in every Room, yet goes unnoticed. The premiere is on 5 September 2026 at the Expedition Theatre’s studio in the Krull House.

The works of Lauri Lest are characterised by spatiality. In his installations, he often uses everyday objects, animating them through sound and light. His installations allow the audience to experience them from all sides, spatially.
The spatial explorations of Urmas Lüüs have led him to create more and more immersive and total environments. Often, his installations can be perceived as frozen moments from theatrical plays that the viewers are able to fill with their own imaginations. The objects surrounding a person can act in some respects as mental catalysts.
